The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
