Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice late to seize a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the final seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past thirteen years.
