Matteo Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in that campaign, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the nature of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
