Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, fiends, and dark forces increasing in influence within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of characters who will split off from the main group to undertake their own adventure, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team includes Teor (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

Given 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the initial installments of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.

What Defines the Combat Party

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a traditionally charged battle-oriented narrative style where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might seem unsuited, but the actions of the third episode make it clear why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

For one thing, the team knows exactly where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.

The antagonist then paid off his debts and ran away to a secure base in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a hostile environment.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could enable the team access places they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to The cleric for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to round up the Questers and Planners groups.

Fans can expect learning which adventurers will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
